How to Repressurise a Boiler Safely
Most sealed central heating systems need their pressure topped up occasionally — it's a normal, expected part of owning a boiler, and manufacturers design the filling loop specifically so homeowners can do it themselves without touching anything gas-related. This guide walks through the steps in plain terms, and just as importantly, explains when to stop doing it yourself and get it looked at instead.

None of this involves the boiler casing, the burner, or any gas component — those remain strictly Gas Safe engineer territory. Repressurising is a water-side task using a loop that's usually a grey or silver braided hose, either permanently fitted or a detachable key-operated version, sitting underneath or beside the boiler.
Before You Start: Read the Gauge
Every boiler has a pressure gauge, usually on the front panel, showing a needle against a numbered scale with a coloured band marking the normal range — typically somewhere around 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is cold, though this varies by model, so check your boiler's manual for the exact figure if you have it. If the needle sits below that band, the system needs topping up. If it's within the band, leave it alone.
Step by Step: Using the Filling Loop
The exact loop design varies by boiler, but the principle is the same across brands.
- Locate the filling loop — a flexible braided hose with a valve or key at each end, usually underneath the boiler.
- Make sure both ends of the loop are properly connected and hand-tight (some are permanently fitted, others need attaching each time).
- Slowly open the valve(s) — you should hear water flowing and see the pressure gauge needle start to rise.
- Close the valve(s) as soon as the gauge reaches the middle of the normal range — this happens faster than expected, so watch the gauge closely rather than the clock.
- If the loop is a detachable key type, disconnect it fully once finished and check for drips at the connection points.
- Check the display for any fault code that might now clear once pressure is restored, and follow your boiler's reset procedure if needed.
What If It Won't Rise, or Overshoots?
If the pressure won't rise at all, the loop valve may not be fully open, or there may be an issue with the mains supply to the loop — this is a reasonable point to stop and call an engineer rather than force anything. If you overshoot and the pressure goes too high, most boilers have a way to release a small amount via a radiator bleed valve, but if you're not confident doing this, it's a very quick, low-stakes job for an engineer to correct — running slightly high briefly is not a safety emergency.
When a Repeat Top-Up Means Something Else
A one-off top-up every few months is unremarkable — that's normal system behaviour. Needing to repeat this every few weeks means water is leaving the system somewhere, and repressurising again doesn't fix why. The usual causes are a leak somewhere in the system, a pressure relief valve letting water out at normal pressure, or a failed expansion vessel — all things a Gas Safe registered engineer diagnoses rather than something to keep managing with top-ups.

Where This Stops Being a DIY Task
Repressurising via the filling loop is the boundary — anything beyond that, including opening the boiler casing, investigating the pressure relief valve or expansion vessel directly, or working on anything gas-side, is not a homeowner task. If topping up doesn't hold, or you're not comfortable with any part of this process, that's a reasonable and normal point to call a fully Gas Safe registered engineer rather than continue.
